If you have a persistent, dull, throbbing ache in your shoulder, it could be one of several things. But one of the things it could be is arthritis. Arthritis, believe it or not, can strike even very young people, in their late teens and early twenties, and especially those young people whose families have a history of arthritis. Even if you're not yet elderly--even, in fact, if you're still quite young--it may be arthritis. But the earlier you catch it and begin treating it, the better your chance of keeping it from becoming debilitating arthritis. Shoulder joint pain may be a sign of arthritis, and it should never be ignored.

Only a doctor can tell you if you have arthritis. But there is a mental checklist you can go through to see if your shoulder joint pain might be arthritis. The first thing, and the most obvious, is to ask yourself if you've injured that shoulder any time in the past few days. Pulling a muscle can cause this same dull, throbbing, persistent pain, and sometimes the ache can last for days. Plus, pulling a muscle can be quite subtle; you may not even realize you've done it. That is, you may not have felt anything at the time, or you may have felt a little pain, but nothing bad enough that it would seem to cause this. But shoulder joint pain can be tricky. If you think you make have pulled a muscle, go to the second item on the checklist; is the pain recurrent? That is, does it go away but then come back a little later, maybe even a few days later? If it does, your shoulder joint pain is probably arthritis.

If you've run over the checklist in your mind, the next step is for you to mention it to your family doctor. You need not necessarily schedule a separate appointment, especially if you have a check up just around the corner, but neither should you wait too long. As with so many other things, early diagnosis is key to stopping it from becoming too bad. Shoulder joint pain can be caused by many things, but one of the things that causes it is arthritis. And arthritis not treated properly and early is a terrible thing to try to live with.
